The Micheaux Award & Film Labs (MAFL) is establishing pathways to sustainable careers in film and media for Arkansas creatives of color.

Our initiatives include the Micheaux Award, providing $40,000 in direct funding to local creatives since 2020 - Micheaux Labs, offering hands-on education and production training with industry experts - and Micheaux Social gatherings, which build community and professional development for creative communities across the state.

The Micheaux Award & Film Labs (MAFL) is on a mission to create sustainable career pathways in film and media for creatives of color in Arkansas.

In partnership with the Clinton School of Public Service, MAFL worked to document and better understand the landscape for creatives of color throughout Arkansas. This collaborative research project conducted throughout spring 2025, aimed to uncover challenges, opportunities, and potential solutions for supporting creative communities in often overlooked regions. The Clinton School team will present findings from their research in April 2025, ensuring that the voices and experiences of Arkansas creatives are at the forefront of this work.

Together, we’re building a more accessible and vibrant future for film and media in Arkansas.

MAFL EVENTS - SPRING 2025

Micheaux Screenwriting Lab

On May 2–3, 2025, the Micheaux Award & Film Labs hosted a dynamic two-day screenwriting lab led by award-winning filmmaker Spade Robinson.

Day one featured a virtual session focused on writing and performance, while day two brought participants together in Pine Bluff for an engaging, hands-on workshop.

The lab offered both emerging and experienced creatives a unique opportunity to develop their storytelling skills in a collaborative environment.

Special thanks to all participants and facilitator Spade Robinson!

Scripts & Sips: A Micheaux Social

On May 3, 2025, following the in-person screenwriting lab, MAFL hosted Scripts & Sips, a relaxed social gathering in Pine Bluff. Attendees enjoyed music, light refreshments, and meaningful conversations, connecting with Spade Robinson, fellow creatives, and local artists.

The event fostered community and celebrated the art of storytelling in a welcoming setting.

Thank you to all attendees! We look forward to seeing you again at the next Micheaux social events!
