In the 1970s, during his third year of law school, my uncle Gene Pitts, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for murder. Over the years I’ve not learned much about his life, but after his untimely death while incarcerated, I learned he was more than a convict. He helped black men get out of prison and home to their families. Though he was never able to appeal, there is inconclusive, missing evidence as well as corruption within the prosecution.
